Maybe this was a bad idea. It sort of settled in Hudâs gut as night fell around them in the quietness of the Uber, on the way to Werner Vogelâs supposed address in the Mittee district. Hud had looked it up, and from the Google street view, it looked like a standard four-story historic building.
And he was going to, whatâassault the man? It was one thing to hit him on the field, completely another to bring the violence to his home. It didnât help that Irisâs words sat inside him, haunting. Donât do something stupid.
Yeah, this might be exactly thatâstupid. But they needed answers.
Except Ned was with him, and Ned was a SEAL, and Hud couldnât get past the idea that heâd somehow notched up the stakes by inviting Ned.
Or Ned inviting him. Whatever.
âDonât kill anyone.â
Ned looked at him. âWhat?â
âJustâ¦donâtâ¦you knowâ¦do SEAL stuff.â
Ned just blinked at him. âYou do know that we try very hard to distinguish the good guys from the bad and to avoid collateral damage? And Werner Vogel is not a terrorist, yet. So donât worry, Hud. Iâm only looking for some answers. Arenât you?â
Hudson nodded. Looked away, his gut still knotted.
Streetlights lit up the roads as the driver wove through old neighborhoods to the northwest corner of the city. Theyâd passed the impressive creamy-white Brandenburg Gate, then the river, bright with the lights of the nearby buildings.
âBut along those lines, whatâs up between you and Iris?â
Hud glanced at him.
âAre you in love with my sister?â
Oh. Hud wiped his hands on his jeans. âIâ¦weâ¦â He sighed. âI donât know, okay? I just know that I feel like I got her into this mess.â
âHow is this your fault? I remember Iris telling us that she showed up on the bridge, she inserted herself into this story.â
âIf I hadnât been there, maybe she wouldnât have been either. And maybe none of this would have happened.â
Ned turned quiet. âThen why were you there?â
Hudson looked out the window again. âI think the Vikings are going to release me.â
âTo the NFL?â
He gave a harsh, bright laugh. âI doubt it. I mean, yeah, my agent called and said heâd lined up a tryout, but Iâm five years off the draft, and sure, Iâve got great hands, and I might be at the peak of my career, but one more hit to the head andâ¦well, Iâm already struggling with brain fog and some steadiness issuesâ¦â
And shoot, he didnât know why heâd said that. Especially to Ned.
âSorry, man. Our guys deal with some of the same thingsâbrain trauma from concussive blasts, and other injuries. But yeah, its an epidemic in football.â
âNever mind the guys coming out of college ballâtheyâre getting faster and stronger every year. And some team can pick them up and mold them.â He shook his head. âIâm not trying to be cynicalâjust honest. And so when Ziggy approached me a few months ago and asked me to be a courier for the CIAâwhich ended up being this private security groupâI thought, why not? Maybeâ¦I dunno, I can be a patriot.
